DeHavilland Ray Elder

My name is DeHavilland Ray Elder. In December 1996, after looking at my latest mammogram, my physician said she had concerns. She saw a calcification on my left breast and I was being referred to an Oncologist.

A few weeks later, in mid-January 1997, I went to an Oncologist and she confirmed that I did indeed have a calcification. Looking through my medical history, she noticed that I had my mammograms every year and cancer did not run in my family; however, I was advised to have a mastectomy and it was scheduled for January 29th. I prayed and asked the good Lord to make sure my surgery would be a success. I went home and told my husband and he said we would get through this because we knew the good Lord was with us.

I checked into the hospital on January 29th and had my surgery. My husband was there and held my hand throughout the entire procedure. The next day, January 30th, on my 47th birthday, my physician told me that the surgery was a success and that I was cancer free. As she was able to get all the calcification, I did not have to undergo radiation or chemotherapy. Again, I thanked the good Lord. I was released from the hospital so I went home to help my body and mind heal.

I have to say, my husband was with me 101% and I could not have done this without him. God is good!
